Okay most of us here are fairly regular Disney-goers, and some are DVC owners and some are not, just wondering your why or why not for owning DVC.
For DH and I it was a way to guarantee that we took regular vacations. DH is notorious for finding more practical things to spend our money on, yet he understands how important vacations are, so he agreed he would always find time to go if we'd already paid for them.

We've thought about buying into it recently, but we have to pay our Odyssey off first, get our emergency fund built up, and take care of some things around the house....lots of other things we'd rather spend money on at this point in time. The maintenance fees are a big downer. My being a SAHM also reduces the amount of "fun money" we have on hand.

I would love to own DVC but we would have to buy so many points to 1. Get a room big enough for all of us and 2. Be able to stay 2 weeks at a time once or twice a year. Like Jen said, the maintenance fees are a downer. If tickets were included, that would be a HUGE incentive. With the way they keep raising ticket prices (which are our biggest expense), I can just see us owning DVC and being able to go but not being able to afford the tickets someday.

We bought DVC points for a couple of reasons.
First of all, we've owned a more traditional time-share (we own a specific week in Key West, not points) since 1989 and love it.
Second, we were already saving up for a big trip to celebrate our 50th & 60th birthdays in a few years so we could go all out to stay at a monorail resort.
Then we took a DVC tour on a whim last July, and decided that with our chunk of money we were saving to pay OOP for a deluxe monorail resort for a long trip, our frequent travel to Disney, our love of timesharing, and our growing desire for luxury and convenience when we travel, that Bay Lake Tower would be perfect for us.
Plus, there are only 2 of us, so we don't need a huge amount of points to be happy with our options.

I have always thought it would be a great option if there are only 2 of you and you can get a studio if you want to. I am so jealous of you!

For us and the uncertainty of military life, we never know when we can go, or even where we'll be, so it's just not practical for us. Even when he gets out and we move back to TX, I still just see us saving up and going when we can.

We bought a small contract back in 2004 and have not regretted it at all. Since there is just the 3 of us at home now and probably soon to be 2 when DD moves out, our small contract covers a studio room for a week. Plus we take advantage of the DVC discounts and member perks. It has worked for us but I know that everyone's situation is different.

(after retirement)... maybe will have time this trip to take a tour I highly recommend the tour.... you will love it for lots of reasons..... if you go to the kiosk near American pavillion in WS, they will get you a DVC shuttle that you catch from "backstage". Getting to go back there is reward enough! But then they will also offer you some great DVC fastpasses as a thank you. Those are cool.... they are good in any park on any FP ride and you can use them as soon as you scan them....no waiting for a later time. PURE MAGIC! You get ice cream if you go to Saratoga Springs, which is where they have mock-up models of different DVC resorts in WDW. It's fun touring through all the models. Of course they might just talk you into making a big purchase, so leave your credit card and/or checkbook in the room safe if you really don't want to be tempted. But if you are ready to buy....go for it! Keep us posted if you do this. I would love to hear about your experience.

Our first tour was at the Beach Club Villas in 2002, but at that time DH and I were planning our wedding and hadn't bought a home yet, so the time wasn't right for us. There was absolutely no pressure to buy. When we toured again in 2004 and bought at Saratoga Springs there was no pressure again. I love my DVC touring experience.

They don't pressure you at all! We did it, they do explain the deals they are having (which makes it sound extra wonderful). But they gave me the gifts (bag, $100 giftcard and fastpasses) and told me where the ice cream was, then left the room to let us talk about it. If we wanted to buy we could call them at the extension they gave us and if we didn't want to we could leave. We went for the $100, there was a postcard in our resort that said go on a tour get $100! It was nice to see all the rooms and Aulani model!

I think owning would be a lot of fun (especially AKL!), but it's not a practical option for us right now since I am a SAHM. Saving for retirement and building up a college fund is more our priority now. One day, though, one day....

We first thought about buying in the mid-90's (?) when they were selling BC. We couldn't swing it back then as I only worked PT, etc. We started thinking about it again a few years ago - we were going to WDW at least once a yr anyway. Decided to go on the tour for Saratoga Springs to hear what they had to say - ended up buying and haven't regretted it once.
I did figure out how much we spent over that 10+yr period and found it would have been cheaper to buy in the 90's. I think it depends whether you tend to stay value or deluxe. We usually stayed deluxe so it does make a difference. I have no intention of buying anymore points - we will make our points work for us & rent if need be.
One thing I like having is an efficiency or full kitchen (1BR). It's also nice to have a separate sitting area. I'm finding we spend a bit mor time at the resort nowadays. I love SS's spa!! Thinking about a girls w/e there soon.
