when the talk first started about shutting down the govt offices, we really didnt take it seriously. we deal with peoples checks...processing forms that if they dont get in the system will stop peoples checks etc. the propoganda that is out there is crazy there was talk on a local radio call in show that the minimum salary here is $80,000.. I ONLY WISH anyway, based on in-house emails and stuff it looks like we might be shut down for a month. we were trying to figure out who else it would affect (effect ) guess all the federal landmarks, federal parks etc will be closed also...a friend was planning a trip to a park in maine (cant remember the name now) and now she is going to cancel in case they are closed.. if my bldg closes (will probably) we also have the private cafeteria workers and the handicapped people who come in to dust and stuff...etc... But according to a union email dont know how reliable that is, congress is not included in losing salary... so, please keep your fingers crossed they dont shut down...of course it will be tough for me....but there are so many people who will suffer (checks get lost - no one around to issue a new one...no offices open to go file a claim for disability or s.s.) i cant imagine the repercussions that will come from this... sorry for the rant...just starting to get the feeling it IS GOING TO HAPPEN

Sorry to hear that Susan.
There is so much misinformation out there about public employees and the benefits & salaries they receive.
I'll be sending positive energy your way, hoping your dept. stays open for the good of all concerned.

Hoping that doesn't happen for you and the other gov't workers. I am thinking they will come to some kind of resolution just in the nick of time.

I, too, hope they can get a resolution before it comes to a shutdown or freeze of any type.

Times are sure scary! I am a teacher and from what I hear in other states and what they want to cut in ours from what I hear is very scary! I am hoping something happens to prevent this awful stuff, but I am not sure there is anything to stop it!

Yikes. I can't imagine SSA closing! It's crazy. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things resolve. It is frustrating that they'd close down the government for a month and not lower their own salaries. It's always the people at the top. When they started cutting things from school board employees last year, my mon had to give up 4 days (unpaid) and also some sick leave/vacation time. She's a school custodian who makes actually very little (under 25k) but the superintendent was making over 400k, cut his salary and save some employees I say!

In the church I grew up in, the pastor actually went without a salary for quite a few years in order to keep the church functioning (we were a very small church not part of any convention). It would be nice if the people up top in government would feel the same self-sacrificial ways!

Definitely scaring stuff. As a retiree from an educational area within state government, if is frightening for me, when I see what is coming for the young people choosing these types of professions - government, education, etc.
I hope things work out for everyone.

I always appreciate when others do the same. It's actually something that Dennis REALLY lows about our church I never understood why any government official needs to make more than say, 250k that is TONS of money as is. I mean how much richer do they need to get off our tax dollars?

found this on a public site federaljobs.net/salarybase.htmaverage employees are grades 5-7... supervisors are 8-9 higher management is up from there... i have to admit it isnt a bad salary... but not great... perks are better than average...as far as time off vacation time - after 32 years i get 2 days a month - which is 4 wks 4 days and that is the max 1 sick day a month and credit time - like comp time and we can choose our own schedule...kind of we have flex - can start any time 6a - 830am..work your 8hrs then leave... 40 hr 5 day week (then can work credit hrs) 4/40 schedule = working 40 hrs in 4 days and the same day off each week or working 80 hrs in 9days and having the same day off every 2 weeks for parents and anyone who needs an other than consistant schedule it is our biggest perk... but that is really it.. health benefits get more and more expensive..and on and on like everyone else.. just venting again...sorry guys...but like every job, there are good points and bad points... just like everyone else...

Warning: This post is probably in the "RANT" category : I'm a government contractor and when times get tough, we are usually the first ones out the door. I love my job and the people I work with, but I wish it wasn't so scary when our elected representatives don't do the job they're paid to do. I wonder if they will still get paid if the government shuts down. It seems that all those wonderful campaign promises evaporate when they get elected. Why can't they just get busy taking care of the USA and her citizens. Ok, I'm done.
